I recently visited Khatu Shyam Ji and Mehandipur Balaji with my family. Both temples were very crowded, but the spiritual atmosphere made the journey worthwhile. We reached early in the morning, which helped us avoid the longest queues.
One thing I really appreciated was that our transport and hotel arrangements were smooth, so we could focus on the darshan instead of worrying about logistics. If you're planning the same trip, I recommend carrying water, wearing comfortable footwear, and starting your day as early as possible, especially during weekends or holidays.
