Unmissable for nature lovers, so well kept, such kind people, amazing encounters with rare creatures

点评：I was so lucky to stay the night here. Amazing nature reserve, so well cared for by the army of dedicated volunteers and Nick the Ranger. Saw Takahe, Kiwi, Kokako, Hihi and so many others. Over 30 species in total. And Wetapunga, the world’s second largest insect!
I paid $50 for a private guide, and had 4 hours with the lovely and knowledgeable Bruce, one of the original volunteers who planted 280,000 native trees in the 1980s.
The walks are plentiful and well signposted. The visitors centre shop is legendary. Lots of benches. Plenty of toilets around the island too.
And the bunkhouse far exceeded my expectations. Very comfortable. Full sized mattresses and pillows, hot showers and a large and well equipped kitchen (range, microwave, toaster, kettles and heaps of pots, pans and utensils).
The water at the bunkhouse and visitors centre is fully treated and safe to drink.
