Overwhelming vista of western Maryland from the monument

点评：The Washington Monument State Park is a beautiful, forested part of the wider South Mountain parks area and connected to the Appalachian Trail. The parking area is spacious with nearby pavilions for picnicing and play areas for children. The inclined gravel path up to the monument was a bit challenging for older people, but glimpses of the monument through the peaceful forest provided an incentive to keep going. There was also a pavilion on the way up where one could stop and rest as needed. On arriving at the top, one is overwhelmed by the vista of western Maryland below. The stone monument itself, initially erected by the citizens of Boonsboro in 1827, was sturdy. It reminded me of the many lime kilns that dot the Maryland countryside. We met a hiker who happily shared that he was passing through on his third time traversing the Appalachian Trail. While the monument itself commemorated a hero of the Revolutionary War and our first president, the surrounding area was also part of the Civil War era South Mountain State Battlefield. We stopped briefly at the visitor center, which had a small museum with photos and stone artifacts. The lack of trash or debris on the grounds was surprising and impressive. This unplanned diversion off Interstate 70 on our way home from Hagerstown became the highlight of our journey.
