点评：The Lit and Phil was founded in 1793 and has been based in its current location, a short walk from Central Station, since 1825. As a place of learning that predates the city's universities, it describes itself as a "sanctuary for book lovers, an oasis for musicians and a realm of magic and mystery for children and the young-at-heart".
What a delight to step away for a moment from the hub and bub of the city into this oasis of stillness. There is a small café at the rear of the central room, with a large communal table, which may or may not be open to non-members.
The library offers free guided tours of the building, which must be booked in advance, along with a programme of daytime and evening events for which charges apply. Full details are available on the website.
The staff were most welcoming and allowed me to venture into the "members only" area to take some of these photos.
