点评:On our way to Olympia, we decided to make a small detour and visit the Mercouri Estate and sample their wines. Although we just showed up, having called a few minutes before to confirm they were open for visitors, we were greeted by Zacharoula who volunteered to show us around starting with the small agricultural museum located onsite. It was an interesting experience, seeing all the old machinery used to make wine and olive oil, two of the staple products of the estate even today, albeit now using modern technology. We were also shown the cellars and the wine producing units and Zacharoula proved to be a very good, pleasant and knowledgeable guide explaining the whole process. We then sat down to sample pretty much all of their very good wines while Zacharoula advised us oN each wine’s provenance and characteristics. The winery is one of the oldest in Greece and maintains an antique charm and provides a useful history of wine making in the area. The winery produces wines using local as well as French and Italian varieties. Also, it is relatively unique, as the majority of their vines are grown at sea level, close to the beaches of Katakolo. Generally, an excellent experience well worth making a detour.
