Stump Cross Caverns - don't pass it by!

点评：I've been fascinated by what is underneath our feet ever since I was a child and so decided that I would visit Stump Cross caverns, as I had not been to this particular cave as a child.
I booked an early slot, which I'd recommend if you are by yourself as I was only down in the cave system with a couple of other groups. The staff were very helpful and explained everything clearly. The caves are well lit at this time of the day, I believe they get darker later in the day. I was given a UV torch to shine on all the walls to see the calcite come to life.
The caves had some some wow moments, especially the Reindeer cavern. It was a cool 7 degrees down there and I would recommend a jumper and strudy shoes. You notice the difference when you head back up top.
I spent a few hours at the caverns, as I had booked to do the Ice Age Dig later in the day. I passed the time by enjoying the homecooked food from the cafe, everything I had was delicious.
The highlight of the day for me was taking part in the Ice Age Dig. They are excavating another cave system and the spoil from the cave is being brought to the surface for the first time in thousands of years. If you sign up to do the dig, you get to spend a glorious hour getting dirty with ice age mud as you sift through to see what you can find, reminding yourself that no one has seen these finds before! Whilst I didn't make a noteworthy find, you can see a wolverine jaw that was found down there. Just the possibility of finding something precious made the whole experience great fun! It was muddy, that was part of the fun and Lisa and Nick were really keen to share their knowledge and appreciate things found.
