点评:Depending on your point of view ‘Verity’ is a either a monstrosity or a very striking landmark.
The 65 foot tall sculpture by Damian Hurst really divides people. We had completely opposite reactions and even as we looked at it, we could hear others around us having the same divided opinions. We could hear the words ‘offensive’, ‘weird’ and ‘gross’ being tossed around.
What you see here is 20.25-metre tall sculpture of a very pregnant, naked woman, standing right on the harbour. In her left hand she holds a sword high above her head as she stares out over the Bristol Channel towards Wales. In her other hand, she holds the scales of justice behind her back and at her feet is a pile of books.
The confrontational part is that from one side she is naked but at least she has skin. The other side of her has been stripped of skin, to show the anatomical working of her muscles, bones, tendons and nerves. Even her womb and the foetus inside is exposed. From this side, she looks alien-like. It’s not pretty and it was always going to provoke.
Interestingly, the statue has been here for about 13 years and it’s still generating conversation. Not many works of art can make that claim. It's confronting but I liked it.
TIP: There is a good information sign near the statue that explains its meaning and how it was made.
