点评:Yesterday my partner & I, with a friend, visited Stockton Bury Gardens, a delightful garden which we'd last visited many years ago.
Our visit yesterday was an outing for our elderly friend who'd not been there before & who cannot walk as easily as he once did, so we'd hired a wheelchair from a wonderful company in Hereford.
I should note at this point incidentally that our elderly friend weighs in at only around 11 stone, so no great weight.
On the garden's website I had read in the preceding days that 'Approximately 70% of the garden is accessible to wheelchairs' & although on arrival we read an information board which described accessibility as being about 50% (rather than 70%) we were not put off by that.
We paid our entrance fees to the very friendly & helpful member of staff in the entrance building & as we started out it was a pleasure to see the adjacent buildings looking as lovely as I remembered.
As it had been so many years since my last visit (& having read that parts of the gardens are accessible to wheelchair users) I had expected that changes must therefore have been made to some of the paths, but I was terribly disappointed to find almost immediately that this is not the case.
My partner & I are thankful to be able bodied & we are accustomed to pushing & manoeuvring a wheelchair on various types of terrain, but many parts of the supposedly accessible route here are 'extremely challenging' to say the least.
Whilst the surface close to the entrance building is tarmacked, once beyond that area the paths are mainly grass. At one change of level (to & fro a flagstone path) there is a small ramp, so surely clearly intended for wheelchairs, but the steepness of the ramp makes it very hard to use even for those of us who have strength & plenty of pushing power!
We ended what turned out to be of necessity a disappointingly short time going around (a relatively small proportion of) the gardens with a pleasant sit-down with refreshments outside the beautiful barn café, beside the pretty orchard - a relief for my partner & I to sit down after an unexpectedly arduous time & a relief for our elderly friend too, whose comfort was very much compromised by the terrain.
Whilst the café itself & the outside seating area is wheelchair accessible, there was no indication of any accessible toilet facilities - none of us had occasion to require use of a toilet, but I did see a sign to one for the able-bodied - sited at the top of a short, but quite steep little slope.
I can only say then that I find it hard to believe that whoever has designated the gardens as wheelchair-accessible has never actually pushed someone of average weight in a wheelchair around the paths.
I expect that my partner & I may visit again at some time in the future, but we will never again bring someone in a wheelchair & at £10.50 each I felt that our visit was extremely poor value indeed, given the aforementioned lack of accessibility.
In conclusion then, I would very strongly advise those confined to wheelchairs to forego visiting these particular gardens.
