点评:The English Heritage site of Shap Abbey is free to visit in daylight hours. Sat nav wanted to send me somewhere completely different but I instinctively followed the worn out brown heritage signs, doing it the old fashioned way. This led me down a single track road which led me to a cattle grid and onto a concreted surface across a field full of sheep and new born lambs – the type that are born with horns, whichever breed that is. There is a designated car park on the right. From there you take the bridge over the River Lowther and walk up the hill.
The abbey was built on the banks of the River Lowther. The West Tower still stands but the rest of the abbey sadly in ruins.
Although the present Shap Abbey was built in 1199, the monastic community, Premonstratensian order of Canons regular, was founded on another site 20 miles south near Kendal in 1190. Shap Abbey escaped the initial phase of the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536, but it was closed in 1540 and subsequently sold to the Governor of Carlisle.
