点评:This is a federal refuge managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and a pass is required. We already had a national parks pass, but you can also pay a small fee online or at the visitor center for a one-day or 7-day refuge pass – see their website for all options. We spent a little over an hour here, starting at the very nice visitor center which was opened in August 2023. However, entry to the exhibit area inside was blocked off with tape for some reason so that was disappointing. During our late morning visit we drove around and saw turkeys, whitetail deer, white pelicans, black vultures, and turkey vultures. Some refuges have a designated auto tour loop but this one does not. We stopped at the Bogard Point area to look at Crab Orchard Lake. This refuge is a pretty area although the roads are shared with various General Dynamics facilities and it therefore doesn’t feel as remote and wild as some other refuges. They have several hiking trails, boat launches, campgrounds, and places where you can fish from piers or the bank, although we did not do any of that.
