点评:We were looking forward to visiting a Stave church while in Norway. After we disembarked the Gudvangen Kaupanger car ferry we drove less than a mile to see our first of three Staves. All staves seem to be set in the most gorgeous of locations. That in itself is a reason to visit. Built in the 1100s, staves are named for the inner wooden columns/staves supporting the church. Since they are made of wood, there are now only 28 left of over 1000 originally found throughout the country. They are architecturally so beautiful and doubly so against the natural backdrop of mountains and water. We took a wonderful tour of the interior. It was nice to be the only ones as the church is very small and it was easier to appreciate its beauty in peace and quiet. We did not realize how special that experience was until we later visited Urnes Stave and Lom Stave churches. They both had big crowds packed in. Although they were truly beautiful too, our intro to staves at the much less visited Kaupanger Stave will always be special to us.
