点评:We hadn’t appreciated that there wasn’t a dedicated car park until we arrived- just one blue badge spot outside the entrance. The surrounding roads (understandably) have ‘residents only’ signs, but we soon found the Yorkshire dales national park car park, which came with a cost of £6 for anything over 2 hours. And you will likely need more than 2 hours because the walk up to the caves is long and relatively steep in places- but thankfully also very well surfaced, with information boards to read along the way.
Whilst the lady on the ticket desk was beyond lovely, upon reaching the top we were met by an incredibly grumpy man for the safety briefing- which was not ideal after such a long uphill slog! The caves themselves were great though, and it was lovely to be able to walk through them at your own pace and take everything in. The written guide was a nice addition and it was fun trying to identify the ‘objects’. There are a couple of short sections where you are required to walk whilst bent forward, so I was grateful I had my hiking stick with me to provide a bit of extra support for these. Even then the space never felt confined and the cave is well lit and feels relatively open.
There is a small refreshments shop by the cave that we popped into before the trek back down, though the only coffee option is instant and tastes pretty terrible, so it would be worth holding out for the brilliant cafe at the bottom if you can!
Certainly worth a visit if you’re looking for something a bit different that you can take your dog along to!
