A glorious ruin, in a spectacular setting!
Edlingham Castle and Edlingham Church的点评
点评:While not as famous as Alnwick Castle, or as well persevered as Warkworth Castle or indeed as dramatic as Dunstanburgh does not matter when it comes to this plucky little Castle. Indeed if English Heritage is to be believed, this castle was recently voted one of the top three castles in Northumberland, so that is something. The views are spectacular, and completely engrossing. Built as a fortified manor house in the 14th century, it was abandoned as a dwelling in the mid-17th century and by the 1660s was being used as a query for building stone. At the end of the 19th century, only the tower was still visible, now a ruin. Since 1975 the remains have been in the guardianship of the state. You can visit the site for free. There are no fercilaties at this site, other than a small car park next to the church, and a short walk to the bus stop where the 471 to Alnwick.
