点评:We visited the vineyards and had a wine tasting here on our Regent Seven Seas ocean cruise excursion. The wine was OK, but we were blown away when we saw the way they grow grapes on this island. The grapes are grown in cone-shaped holes that allows the plant to grab the fertile soil buried under the layer of black ash from volcanic eruptions. The depth and diameter of the excavated pits vary according to the thickness of the ashes and can reach depths of up to three meters. The holes are surrounded by a small stone wall (the soco) to protect them from the wind. Due to the physical geography dealing with mountains, all the work in the vineyard is manual and without mechanization. This is the most unique cultivation system in the world. We have been to many vineyards around the world, and this was our first to see this kind of vineyard. We were very impressed!!
