点评:This is one for people who like sampling street food and taking in the sights and smells of local food markets. It’s a small but colourful market which is dominated by Mediterranean and North African spices, foods and ingredients. You'll find some fresh fruit & veg and hot food stalls also. Many of the places have established shopfronts rather than temporary stalls.
In terms of French markets, this one is gritty and a little seedy. It's quite different from the traditional, pretty Provencal market.
It’s easy enough to walk here from the Old Port as it is very close. We arrived when the market was almost closing up so we missed some of the atmosphere (websites will tell you that it closes at 7pm and that is probably the official time but packing up started much earlier than that).
A large, white marble statue out the front of the market hall caught my eye. “La Statue de la Paix” (Statue of Peace) was created in 1809 to commemorate the Treaty of Amiens (1802), an historic peace agreement between France, UK, Spain, and the Batavian Republic.
Whilst we had no reason to feel wary when we walked through the market in the day time, it was a different matter at night. Later, when we walked back from Cours Julien, it felt pretty dodgy and we picked up our pace and walked quickly back to the main tourist area.
