If you're visiting Kamloops or the surrounding area, the 89 Mile Cultural Expedition is an absolute must.
Our guide, Kyle Minnabarriet, made this far more than a boat tour—it was an immersive cultural journey through the spectacular Thompson River and the traditional lands of the Secwépemc people.
The scenery is simply breathtaking. Towering cliffs, crystal-clear water and endless mountain vistas make every moment memorable. Along the way we saw numerous bald eagles, including a young eagle learning to fly and several eagles feeding along the riverbank. It was an incredible wildlife experience.
What made the tour truly special, however, was Kyle's storytelling. He shared the history of his people, pointed out the locations of traditional villages, explained how his ancestors lived along the river, and recounted stories that have been passed down through generations, including how peace was eventually achieved between neighbouring Nations through intermarriage.
You don't just see the Thompson River—you come to understand its cultural significance through the eyes of someone whose family has lived on this land for generations.
Kyle's knowledge, warmth and generosity made this one of the highlights of our trip to Canada.
