Exploring the Small, Hill-Top Town of Monteriggioni....
Piazza Roma - Monteriggioni的点评
点评:Piazza Roma is the main square in the tiny, hill-top town of Monteriggione, an easy and popular day-trip from Siena (just 20 minutes by car or bus).
We entered Monteriggioni through the imposing 13th century gateway of Porta Franca and immediately found ourselves in Piazza Roma. Much of the town appears unchanged over the centuries so it felt as if we were stepping back in time. We could easily imagine that this was how it all looked in Medieval times.
Ancient defensive walls stand over 10 metres tall and loom over the piazza which is dominated by the austere stone facade of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.
An ancient brick well is a feature in the square’s centre. It would once have been the focus of daily life in the village.
The square is surrounded by historic buildings with stone facades. There are a handful of shops and several cafes or restaurants with tables outside in the sun.
