点评:Took a tour here during the Whitehead Summer Festival. Staggering place, an enormously impressive piece of Victorian engineering. There was a quarry nearby for centuries cutting the blocks of white limestone from the headland of White Head. The great walls of the harbour are enormous, lengthy and still standing strong against the sea. I’ve read that David Stewart Kerr had it built around 1850.
The owner today, Terrence Stitt, is both very knowledgeable and very entertaining. He has great stories like when ships were launched from Harland and Wolff in Belfast they’d roll down the slipway on wooden beams that would drift out to sea where locals around Belfast Lough would retrieve them. The floor of the building he was showing us included lots of these beams. He was even able to point me to belemnite fossils on the building’s outside walls. If you get a chance to visit, I’d recommend it.
