点评:While driving along Portage Avenue to check in at our hotel in Sault Ste. Marie, we passed the Historic Tower enroute and decided to investigate during our brief stay in town. We learned that tallest tower in Michigan's upper peninsula is open until 5:00 pm. Arriving there just after 3:30 on a Saturday afternoon, we still had enough time to check out all the displays and to enjoy the views from the top.
The curator was a lovely young lady, who handles admission, customer service, and even clean-up at the end of the day. The adult admission fee is $8.75 and a child's admission is $4.50. Visitors can buy multi-attraction tickets here as well, if you're interested in a Soo Locks boat tour or in checking out the Valley Camp freighter museum, which is the permanent home of battered remnants of the lifeboats recovered after the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior in 1975, among other historic items of interest. The freighter is moored a few blocks east of the tower.
We spent 15 minutes asking questions about various displays in the tower display room, and our guide was pleased to answer them in depth. She taught us about some of the traditions of the native Ojibwas who preceded European explorers in this area.
After thoroughly exploring the lower level, we boarded the elevator to the glass-enclosed observation platform 200 feet above us. There are two open-air observation platforms as well, which we checked out, but it's very windy and chilly up there in October, so I wouldn't recommend those. The other downside to the open-air platforms is that they are equipped with tall metal spikes along the entire edge of the concrete walls so visitors can't fall over the side of the building. But you can't get good panoramic photos because the spikes are visible in every photo. At best, you can poke your hand through the spikes and grab a photo via that method. (But don't lose your grip on your camera!)
The enclosed observation platform is lovely for gawking in comfort at the scenery - protected from the weather - and for photography, though the glare of the sun on the windows can skew some of your photos, depending on which direction you're facing. We spent time watching freighters in the distance coming in and out of the locks, and watched tour boats and leisure craft maneuver the river as well. On a clear day, you can see for 20 miles in any direction. The views up top are pretty spectacular during peak autumn leaves season.
Be aware that, after peak tourist season ends in mid-October, the tower is open only one day a week - on Thursdays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
