Great way to explore the Greenbrier River

点评：We (2 adults and a teenager) unexpectedly had several free hours in our day, so we called and Jerry was happy to do a same-day rental so we could ride the Greenbrier River Trail. We picked up and rode from the shop (rather than have him drop the bikes off at the trail), so he even gave us a little extra time on the clock. If you go in person, it’s worth noting they’re still in the process of moving in to their new location and setting up for the season, so the shop was in a bit of disarray—we weren’t sure we had the right place first, as it’s in a former church—but it’s charming and Jerry was incredibly friendly and fun to deal with. Some of the bike frames have seen some wear, but the drivetrains and brakes all looked in great shape as far as I could see, and, importantly, the helmets were all newer and in good condition.
The ride from the shop to the turnoff for the road that leads to the river trail is about a 10-minute ride mostly along a moderately-trafficked state route. I wouldn’t try it with small kids, but with older kids who have some experience riding in/around traffic, it’s not bad—the shoulders are wide enough, and drivers gave us enough room. If you’re not comfortable doing that ride, or have smaller children, I’d probably just arrange to have the bikes dropped off.
The river trail itself was fantastic. Nice, smooth gravel, tons of scenery, and many little waterfalls along the side. We rode up to Loopemount Waterfall (which is actually a couple miles further up the trail than it says on Google Maps—between mile markers 8 and 9, I think) and back. There’s one great spot with a staircase down to the riverbank, where there are some rocks you can go out on and splash around in the river. There was no drinking water today we noticed along our ride, so make sure you carry plenty of your own.
Overall, this was a great experience with a great business, and we’ll absolutely do it again when we’re back here next year.
