点评:I was born and raised in Alsace, France, and I did not expect to find a piece of my home standing in the Texas Hill Country. The Steinbach Haus stopped me cold.
This is a genuine Alsatian farmhouse, built centuries ago in the village of Wahlbach in Alsace, later dismantled beam by beam, shipped across the Atlantic, and reassembled here as a gift from Alsace to Castroville, the town Alsatian families settled starting in 1844. The half-timbered construction, the steep tiled roof, the window boxes with red geraniums: as someone who grew up around houses exactly like this, I can tell you it is the real thing, down to the joinery. Standing in front of it while the American, Texan, French, and Alsatian flags fly together on the lawn is quietly moving in a way I did not anticipate.
It serves as Castroville's visitor center, so start here: the volunteers are welcoming, there is good material on the town's Alsatian history, and it orients you for a walking tour of the historic district, where dozens of original settler-built homes still stand. Free to visit, and easily combined with a stroll and a stop at the local bakery.
Castroville calls itself the Little Alsace of Texas, and this house is the proof of concept. For anyone with Alsatian or German roots, or anyone who loves improbable history, it is worth the short drive from San Antonio. Bring your camera. The flags alone are worth it.
