点评:The Orpheum has a lot of charm which is lacking in the big chain cinemas.
First opened in 1935, historic cinema might have been lost but instead it was saved by the 1980s by Australian media personality, Mike Walsh, who intervened to rescue and revive it.
It’s decorated in a lavish Art Deco style with heavy red velvet curtains across the screens, a gallery of old movie posters and photographs (many signed), and Art Deco sculptures and lighting on the walls.
In a wonderfully old-world touch, there’s a working Wurlitzer organ which used to be played regularly (but I haven’t seen this for some time now).
There are 6 individual cinemas and there are usually about 10 different movies showing per day. Some cinemas are smaller than others. We recently saw Nuremberg in Cinema 1 which is one of the smallest cinemas. It’s long and narrow cinema with a smaller screen but nobody is very far from the screen.
Seating is comfortable, with reasonable leg room but what I like best is that the arm rests can be lifted up.
Parking is not always easy. Mid-week is generally OK but weekends can be tricky. The public car park behind the theatre is small. It’s free but it’s often full and it has a 3 hour time limit. Street parking is also free but we often need to get the driver to drop everyone at the theatre and then continue to circle around to find a parking spot.
There is a handful of restaurants either close to, or across the road from, the theatre. We like Fratelli’s for a pizza and Nigiri’s for Indian.
TIP:
If like us, you go to the movies reasonably regularly, then the best value way to see a movie here is to buy the book of 10 tickets (you save about $10 per ticket).
