点评:Mzima Springs in Tsavo West National Park is a must-see place along the route through Tsavo West. We make a stop at the Springs each time we travel through Tsavo West, yearly, as the views change with the seasons and the light of the day. There is always something new to spot, too, as many birds can be seen in the trees and bushes around the main pool as well as along the streams where papyrus and grasses line the banks. Entry is free since the Springs are in the National Park for which you will have paid the entrance fee. The Springs are an easy drive of roughly 40 to 90 minutes from Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge near the Chyulu Gate travelling south, alternatively coming south from Mtito Andei at the Tsavo West Main Gate. Coming from the east side, the Springs are also easily reached from the Tsavo Gate or Manyani Gate on the Mombasa Highway A109. There is lots to see along the way as the area is home to herds of elephants, kudu, porcupines, and many species of birds, and interesting rock formations. At Mzima, it is required that a KWS Guide accompany you along the trails, to see the main pool, the streams associated with the four springs, the main stream with hippo pool, crocodile nesting places, and many old and huge specimens of trees such as Newtonia and Yellow Bark Acacia. The guides are very knowledgeable, and the information they share makes for a rewarding learning experience. The Springs are fed by rainwater percolated through the Chyulu Hills volcanics, so the water is pure, ancient, and beautiful to behold. A special feature of the main pool is the "underwater viewing chamber" accessed by an old walkway and wooden steps. In this chamber, you are underwater, with a view of the creatures living in the pool including several species of fish, and crocodiles. The trails are outlined with rocks and their surface is of crushed volcanic ash gravel. Wear closed shoes--if you wear open sandals or flip-flops, after a few steps, the gravel will hurt your feet. There is a restroom at the parking area of the site. There is no restaurant or bar here, take a picnic snack or lunch to enjoy a longer time at the Springs. There are signs at the entrance drawing attention to the need to stay on the trails, with your guide, and to be aware that wildlife are all around. Overall, Mzima Springs is a rewarding visit that can be a memorable morning or morning/afternoon excursion, perhaps coupled with a visit to the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary not far away to the east along route C103, which is open to visitors at 4pm daily. Build these two special places into your travel through- or your stay in Tsavo West National Park.
