Lovely stone church with some beautiful stained glass windows and the largest organ in SA.
Pilgrim Uniting Church的点评
点评:We had walked past this church in Flinders Street on numerous occasions during our visits to Adelaide and were lucky enough this time to find it open and be invited in to have a look.
Built between 1865 and 1867 and originally dedicated as the Stow Memorial Congregational Church, the church was renamed the Pilgrim Uniting Church in 1976.
It is said that the church has been designed in Revival Gothic style and it appeared to be in the shape of a cruciform.
The principal entrance is at the front where there is an impressive pillared portico in Caen limestone with four pointed arches supporting an open parapet. Above this parapet, in the front wall, is a huge gothic window. The other entrance, and the one we used, is on the side through a lobby in the tower which was to be the base of a spire that would be over 50 metres high, but this has never been built.
The interior design of the church has a central clerestoried nave with four bays and aisles either side. There is a narthex inside the principal entrance which supports the organ gallery. Looking towards the rather simple altar you can see transepts either side of the nave with huge gothic arches. Behind the altar is a beautiful rose window. There are also beautiful stained glass windows in the clerestory and along the walls of the aisles.
The roof is hexagonal in shape and appeared to be plaster with wood trim.
The organ was moved from another church and rebuilt here in 1973. It has subsequently been enlarged and is said to be the largest organ in South Australia.
