点评:Harmony is one of the National Trust’s smaller gardens, and admission is free. We visited in August when the productive and colourful vegetable and cut-flower garden was at its peak, and if you’re into ‘grow your own’, you’ll find much of inspiration and interest. There are nearby deep herbaceous borders too, which were still displaying much end-of-Summer colour and interest. We also liked the large pots of seasonal colour in front of the well-preserved Mackenzie and Moncur greenhouse. This is the first time we’ve visited in late- Summer, our previous visit being in the Spring where the rather charming box-lined rhododendron and azalea-filled shrubbery to the north of the house was doing its thing; this time, the wall-trained fruit was the feature here, apple and pear-trees beautifully pruned. The walls and large trees, along with the fragrant, box-lined paths give this garden an old-fashioned and peaceful ambiance, providing a calming oasis, further enhanced by the beautiful hills that surround this picturesque Borders town. Could the garden be improved? The day we visited, the lawns in front of, and to the side of the house looked like they could do with some attention. Well worth a visit if you’re staying in Melrose!
