点评:We were a family group of seven adults, mostly seniors, and Federica gave us an outstanding morning in Venice. She met us at our hotel and guided us through the Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica.
What set her apart was how she explained the whole story of Venice: how this small city became the seat of power in the Mediterranean from the 7th century until the fall of the Republic, and how it actually governed itself — the Doge at the top, his advisors, the councils, and the other branches of administration. Standing in those council chambers while she explained who sat where and how decisions were made brought the whole Republic to life. And she showed us how it was all made possible: Venice's strong navy and army opened and protected the spice routes to Asia, and the trade that flowed back through the city is what turned Venice into a powerhouse.
She also reframed Italy itself for us. For most of its history, "Italy" was not one country at all, but a patchwork of rival regions and city-states constantly fighting each other — each with its own local dialect. She even showed us how the Venetian dialect uses completely different words from standard Italian. It explained so much about the fiercely independent Venice we were standing in.
She did the same with the art. In the Palace and the Basilica she explained not just what we were looking at, but the history behind the paintings and mosaics. She showed us that the Basilica's mosaics are made from individual pieces of colored stone and mineral — she even had samples to pass around, showing where each one came from. And she pointed out something none of us had ever noticed: how most history books and tourist guides on Italy barely mention the great Venetian artists and explorers — she put them back into the story where they belong. It genuinely gave us a new perspective on Venice. We will never walk through St Mark's Square the same way again.
Federica was also patient and well-paced for a senior group, and handled all the practical details — timing, headsets, tickets — so we never felt rushed. If you want to understand Venice, not just see it, book Federica. Highly recommended.
