点评:This museum very much reminded me of the Monty Python cheese shop sketch.
It’s obvious that the ladies on reception were making it as difficult as possible for anybody to visit the museum!
You enter the building through a large archway, and there’s a door on the left with a sign clearly stating “entrance” and “tickets”.
The door was sticking, very difficult to push open and made a huge, groaning noise – it doesn’t like being opened!
When I went in, they quickly explained that they couldn’t sell me a ticket and that I had to scan a QR code outside and book it online, or I could buy it at the Castel Vecchio site.
I was quickly bundled back out into the cold and spent about 20 minutes trying to buy the ticket online, all the while standing in the archway, which acted as a sort of cold wind tunnel.
Through grim determination, (The payment links crashed several times) I eventually purchased my €4 ticket and went back inside. They looked at it and then immediately sent me outside again to go and visit the stones in the ‘garden’ or courtyard.
A lot of these are very weathered or damaged and were purchased in the 18th century from Venetian collectors, so mainly came from former Venetian territories in the Peloponnese, Aegean islands and western Ionia.
Having completed that, I went back inside and was shown the way to the elevator, which accesses the first and second floors.
There are two small rooms of exhibits; one with Latin inscriptions and one in Greek.
Some of these are quite interesting and in better condition. One of the ladies had to leave her comfy seat in Reception to come upstairs and staff the gallery while I was viewing the exhibits.
When I got downstairs, a new gentleman had arrived on the staff and immediately enquired of the ladies whether I had visited the garden yet.
You’re not be surprised to learn that I was the only visitor there!
