点评:This art gallery, housing not only paintings but also sculptures and goldsmith works, is a small but far from negligible general art museum that does honor to Castiglion Fiorentino.
It's located in the former church of Sant'Angelo, on the left as you ascend the ramp leading to the "Cassero" esplanade. It opened here in 1991, while previously most of the works now housed here were located in the Palazzo del Comune.
Visitors will particularly notice the most striking paintings, such as a 13th-century painted cross — for which one critic even named Cimabue — a Madonna and Child by Taddeo Gaddi, and the Stigmata of Saint Francis by Bartolomeo della Gatta.
You won't be able to contain your amazement at the masterpieces in the goldsmith's section, such as the 13th-century French Holy Cross (donated by Louis IX, King of France), or the 14th-century bust-reliquary of Saint Ursula, by Franco-Rhine school.
Naturally, I've only mentioned the highlights: there's much more to admire in the museum, not least the original arrangement of artworks in the former church and other adjacent former religious buildings.
I have no hesitation in stating that this small but precious museum is the most not-to-be-missed in Castiglion Fiorentino (the Museum of Sacred Art of the Pieve di San Giuliano is in second place).
