County community with around 400 houses,
businesses, and other structures, 280 of which
were deemed eligible "resources" to comprise
a historic district for the town. Brick making
has been a local industry since the mid-19th
century, so two historic churches and many
homes are made of brick. Wooden frame
houses of two and two and a half stories are
more common. Main Street is also Maryland
Route 272 and runs from the northern end of
the county down to the historic lighthouse at
urkey Point. In town, it is one way south, while
the paraliel Mauldin Avenue to the east is one
vay north. This makes passage through the
main business and tourist areas much easier.
Two historic churches grace the southern end
of Main, St Mary Anne's Episcopal Church,
in operation for over 300 years, and North
East Methodist Church across the street.
Although the Methodist Church building is
only about 110 years old, its congregation has
occupied several buildings in the town for
three centuries. Another building of interest
includes the late 19th century town hall
Transportation forms an integral part of North
East's development, beginning with the North
East River that leads up from the Chesapeake
Bay. Then came the Baltimore-Philadelphia
HighwGy (Maryland Route 7) and eventually
the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore
Railroad. A small plaque notes that George
Washington used the highway. Hopefully, the
town will invest in something like the small oval
blaques used in the nearby Havre de Grace
Historic District to designate the buildings
included and their year of construction.
