点评:Oak Grove Cemetery in Lexington, Virginia, originally known as the Presbyterian Cemetery and later the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery after the famed Confederate general who was buried here in 1863, is located at 316 South Main Street, less than a mile from Jackson's former home and the campuses of Washington & Lee University and Virginia Military Institute. It was renamed in Jackson's honor in 1949 while the current name dates to 2020. Also buried here are 144 Confederate veterans, two Virginia governors and Margaret Junkin Preston, the Poet Laureate of the Confederacy. Jackson's statue, created by sculptor Edward V. Valentine and erected in 1891, is the centerpiece of the cemetery. The family plot includes Jackson, his first and second wives and his two daughters. For years, visitors left lemons on the pedestal of Jackson's gravesite, a reference to an unfounded story that Jackson had a habit of chewing lemons, especially during a battle. On my visit, no lemons were seen. Other notables buried in Oak Grove include Sandie Pendleton, Jackson's adjutant who was killed in 1864 at Fisher's Hill, Virginia governors John Letcher and James McDowell, Confederate generals Elisha Franklin Paxton, Edwin Gray Lee and William Nelson Pendleton, noted journalist Charles McDowell, a regular panelist on public television's series Washington Week in Review, and John Thomas Lewis Preston, founder of VMI.
