点评:Mount Tallac gave us one of our favorite hiking experiences around Lake Tahoe. We started early and enjoyed a quiet, peaceful atmosphere through the forest before the trail opened to alpine lakes, rocky slopes and wider mountain views.
There was no admission fee when we visited, and the trailhead parking was free, although the small parking area filled quickly. We recommend arriving early and checking the latest permit requirements before setting out.
The complete out-and-back hike took us about seven hours, including photo stops and a longer break at Cathedral Lake. That lake became our natural decision point. We checked our remaining water, energy, weather and turnaround time before continuing toward the summit.
The crowd size varied throughout the day. The trailhead and lower sections were fairly busy in the morning, but hikers became more spread out above Cathedral Lake. The upper route felt much quieter, steeper and more exposed, with loose rock that also made the descent slower than expected.
There is no regular staff presence along the trail, so this is very much a self-guided hike. Download an offline map, carry everything you need and do not depend on finding assistance, water or supplies higher up.
We brought plenty of water, electrolytes, quick carbohydrates and a few substantial snacks. We saved a PROTABAR for our Cathedral Lake break, and it became a small but memorable part of the day before tackling the harder climb above the lake.
This trail is best for fit hikers who are comfortable with sustained climbing, rocky terrain, altitude and a long descent. Couples and hiking partners who enjoy challenging full-day adventures will love it. Hikers wanting a shorter experience can make Cathedral Lake their destination and still have a beautiful day.
Challenging, scenic and unforgettable. We would gladly hike it again in good weather.
