点评:I had booked to see the 'Horn Factory', a group of ensemble musicians from all over East Anglia, perform Big Band Jazz, which I love.
As a novice to live music at the venue, I was ill-prepared for the appallingly high level of the amplification, especially as the only remaining spaces, having booked late, were in the front row. Now I know why the seats either side of me, as the metaphorical curtain went up, were unoccupied.
Coming from a broadcasting background, I know more than a little about sound balance - and this wasn't at all good.
Watching an instrument on the left of the stage coming out of the right speaker totally ruined it for me.
Apart from the fact the conductor/compere had rather TOO much to say and kept referring to 'this evening' throughout the AFTERNOON performance, the level of his radio-microphone - when it worked - was FAR too high. I tried to tell this to the technician when he came to replace the mic with a cabled version, to no avail.
How he hadn't noticed that the mic on the electric piano was also cutting out intermittently defeats me.
The music was actually very good and seemed to be much appreciated by the capacity audience. But after 45 minutes of putting my finger in my right ear when a trumpet player hit an especially high note, I had such a headache, there was no option other than to leave.
Standing at the back briefly as I put on my jumper and coat - it was far too warm for my liking - the sound was somewhat better, but I do question the need for a big band to have such a high level of amplification at all in such a relatively small venue.
Or maybe they were recording it? Who knows?
