点评:Once my student docent, a Dawg of a Georgia football fan, became aware that I am a retired sports reporter, she couldn't wait to show off the Old Governor's Mansion in Milledgeville, Georgia. Located at 120 South Clark Street, on the campus of Georgia College and State University, it was built in 1839 and is considered one of America's finest examples of High Greek Revival architecture in the South. So much so, it was designated a National Historic Landmark for its architecture in 1973. The two-story house, which features an interior rotunda, is set on a manicured parcel of land, its street-facing sides lined by a brick retaining wall topped by a low white fence. The building is rectangular, built of stuccoed brick with a hip roof capped by a small circular cupola. The main facade faces west toward Clark Street and has a four-columned Greek temple portico projecting at its center. The portico is supported by smooth Ionic brick columns with granite bases and capitals. It supports an entablature and fully pedimented gable. The entablature is continued around the sides of the building with pilastered corners. Historically, the mansion was home to Georgia's chief executive from 1839 to 1868. During Union General William Tecumseh Sherman's March to the Sea, it was claimed as a prize when Sherman was headquartered in the building on November 23, 1864. Open from 10 to 4 Tuesday through Saturday and 2 to 4 on Sunday, Old Governor's Mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
