点评:The Tolsey Museum is one of the is one of the main sights on any walking tour of Burford.
You can’t miss it. Look for the black and white half-timbered Tudor building with the clock jutting out across the High Street.
Built in the 1500s, it was a central building in the town, serving mainly as a toll-house where market traders came to pay their dues, although the Borough Court also met here and there was a small jail, or lock-up, around the back.
The building is distinctive because it is raised up on stilt-like, stone pillars with a large, open area below. At first we wondered if this might have been due to flooding from the nearby River Windrush but in fact the open area underneath was the medieval marketplace.
In medieval times, wool was king in the Cotswolds and wool merchants met here, making the Tolsey building a hub for the sale of wool and cloth. It’s no coincidence that the Tolsey building is on the corner of Sheep St and High St. In medieval times, hundreds of prized sheep were funnelled, single-file down the narrow passage of Sheep St, into the market square for sale. This made it easier to count and control the sheep as they were herded into the market. We could only imagine the noise and the smell.
When we were there, a small market was being held on the ground floor and we could see how it might have operated centuries ago.
Today, the upper levels house a small museum (entry by donation) but it has very limited hours. It’s open every day over summer, but only from 2 - 5pm. We had arrived in Burford early in the morning hoping to beat some of the summer crowd so unfortunately we were too early for the museum.
