点评:I attended the one-week untutored writing retreat along with 7 others in June and LOVED it (can I go back like now please?). Being a capital city dweller (yes, Cardiff counts as a capital city), I'm equal parts excited and nervous staying anywhere 'out in the sticks'. What I loved about A Place to Write is the beautiful countryside location where it feels like time is suspended... and a few mins walk to a quaint village which has a cafe, Church and museum to explore in breaks from writing/check in with civilisation.
I stayed in a mid-priced room which was spacious and comfortable, and had its own dedicated writing desk next to a power socket. Everything was thought through - there was a little tea, coffee and biscuit station, and a cutely designed notebook and vintage desk lamp - everything a writer needs.
The meals were two course, home-cooked and delicious with fresh ingredients and were hearty and filling. This isn't generic restaurant food, this is food you wish you could cook at home if you had the skill (and your kids gave you more than 20 minutes without screaming that they're starving). On top of that, there are morning and afternoon tea breaks to stretch your legs, be a bit social if you want but more importantly drink more tea.
Nic & Wendy are brilliant hosts. Nic started the day with optional intention setting & accountability, which was the right low pressure placemarking that I needed. One of the highlights was sharing our work by candlelight on the last evening. This isn't just for creatives (aren't we all creatives, really?) but for everyone to read out their work or just share their research or the progress they've made that week. This was a lovely touch to learn by osmosis some of the interesting academic research and work others are up to that I wouldn't have otherwise, something unique that you don't get in a lot of writing groups.
As someone who has to get up at 5am to squeeze in writing and is lucky to get 200 words committed to paper, to have a week dedicated to it was daunting at first. Will I or can I write? I wrote over 5000 words! And loved the space and freedom to do it.
So if you're reading this & you're unsure like I was earlier this year, read this as your instruction: take the leap & do it.
