点评:Tucked away in the small fishing town of Maketū is a cultural experience like no other. Muirs Tours, run by Deon Muir, is absolutely worth the 50-minute drive northeast of Rotorua.
Deon shared the incredible story of how his ancestors arrived in Maketū aboard the Te Arawa waka, giving us a fascinating insight into the history and culture of the Te Arawa people. We visited tribal lands with spectacular views, explored a marae, and learnt about Māori traditions while our traditional hāngī—helped prepared and placed into the ground by us—slowly cooked.
Our kids absolutely loved being involved and learning firsthand about Māori culture. We were made to feel so welcome in Deon and Ngaire’s home, and it was inspiring to learn about sustainable fishing, living off the land, and the importance of caring for the environment.
This was an authentic, heartfelt experience that we’ll never forget. If you’re visiting the Rotorua area, I can’t recommend Muirs Tours highly enough.
