Memorial Plaque to Lieutenant General Vladimir Oskarovich Kappel的点评
点评：I stumbled upon that plaque by pure coincidence in late June when I was in Belyov on personal business. My key destination in that town was, in fact, a local factory that produces the famous Belyov fruit paste. I visited the place, and on my way back to the car I spotted it.
Vladimir Kappel (1883-1920), a Russian of Swedish descent, was a genuine patriot of my country who opposed the Leninists until his final breath. He spent his childhood in the town, hence that modest tribute. In 1920, while retreating through Siberian taiga during a severe winter under onslaught of the Red Army, he fell through the ice and suffered frostbite in both legs. Gangrene developed, and he ultimately succumbed to pneumonia.
The sight is great for Russian history buffs, but it won't mean much for anyone else, especially foreigners.
