My daughter arranged a private tour of County Clare as a Mother’s Day surprise, and from the moment we confirmed our booking — which came together very last minute — Peter made us feel like we were his only priority. He was warm, flexible, and worked with us on both our budget and the places we hoped to see. That kind of care before the tour even begins tells you everything.
We set out from Galway and spent the afternoon winding through some of Ireland’s most extraordinary countryside. The Burren alone is unlike anything I’ve ever seen — this ancient, otherworldly landscape that you simply cannot understand from a photograph. We visited Poulnabrone Dolmen, one of Ireland’s oldest portal tombs, the magnificent Cliffs of Moher, the quiet ruins of Corcomroe Abbey, and the lovely towns of Lisdoonvarna and Kilfenora.
And still, somehow, the stops in between — the little pull-offs, the views, the places that don’t appear on any map — were just as wonderful.
As a tour guide, Peter Mooney’s knowledge of Clare and of Ireland runs deep. You can feel how much he loves this place. He shared history and stories all day long without it ever feeling like a rehearsed script — it felt like being shown around by a friend who just happens to know everything.
For a mother traveling with her daughter, there is nothing quite like a private tour experience where you set the pace. We lingered where we wanted. We stopped for photos. We never once felt hurried.
