A wonderful day hike in Agalyk, just outside of Samarkand – definitely go!

点评：Samarkand is a wonder of ancient sites, but right in its backyard is also mountainous wilderness, where a day hike is a perfect way to take time out from seeing the sites. Rustam, one of the founders of this small business focused on expanding ecological awareness, expertly guided us on a several hour hike/walk with moderate elevation gain through the countryside of Agalyk. He is passionate about sharing this part of the beautiful outdoors, which are right in Samarkand’s backyard but not well known even to locals. In a crowded world, it is rare to go on a hike and feel like one has an entire mountainscape to oneself, let alone to have a picnic lunch overlooking a fantastic view, with soaring eagles overhead the only sound. What a special day!
What equally captivated us was the interesting conversation we had with Rustam throughout our day together. He is very personable, open, and curious – as eager to learn from you as you are from him. We learned a great deal about many topics – including his love of the outdoors and his passion for expanding its appreciation in Uzbekistan. He’s a polyglot and speaks good English. It is definitely worth adding a day to your time in Samarkand to join Rustam for a hike in this beautiful countryside. Highly recommended.
