点评:I took the JR ferry from Hiroshima to Miyajima because I wanted to visit the famous Itsukushima Shrine. However, what ended up being my favorite part of the island was hiking on Mount Misen. I found the trail by accident after wandering off from the crowds near the water shrine. Since I visited the island during what I later learned was the popular golden week, it was very difficult to avoid the crowds with so many families taking a vacation the same week. Finding this hiking trail offered a bit of reprieve from all the noise.
The trail to the summit follows the Momijidani River. If you hike leisurely, it takes about 90 minutes to get to the top. There are a few large temples near the summit and the views from the summit itself are absolutely breathtaking.
Many hikers stop by the Reikado temple to pay respects by praying or burning incense and candle. Visitors are also welcome to scoop and drink the hot water from the giant kettle in the shrine.
On the descent, I followed a different trail back down and this one had numerous smaller shrines along the trail. There’s more than one trail around the mountain so I hope to come back again and hike other routes that I haven’t explored.
