The road to Saint Anthony’s Monastery in Qozhaya has long been known for being steep and difficult, although some improvements have been made recently and the access is better than it used to be.
The monastery itself is quite large, although you don’t have access to all of it. When you reach the parking area, you’ll find some of the monastery’s own agricultural produce for sale. For me, the highlights were always the apricots and apples.
There are also several caves where hermits used to live, which give you a real sense of the history and character of the place. Along the way, you pass a newer building that serves as a small guesthouse/hotel, where you can book a room for two or three people. If you stay there, you also have access to a large terrace with an incredible view over the valley. It must be especially beautiful in the evening, when you can sit there, enjoy the sunset, and take in the surrounding landscape.
The church square is beautiful. The exterior of the church has a distinctive Oriental architectural style and is partly carved directly into the rock. This is also a functioning monastery, not simply a historical site, so you may see monks going about their daily activities. If you are lucky, you may even witness a Mass celebrated by the monks.
The museum is also worth visiting. You can see old tools, books printed in Aramaic and Syriac, and material related to the monastery’s historic printing tradition. The monastery apparently had one of the oldest printing presses in the Middle East, dating back to the 17th century. Unfortunately, the original wooden press is no longer there. Instead, the museum displays a later Columbia printing press from the 19th century.
One particularly interesting object is a bishop’s staff said to have been gifted by Saint Louis, King of France.
The only real disappointment for me was the canteen/café. It is very basic, so if you are planning to stay overnight, I would recommend bringing something with you for dinner.
Another major reason to visit is the hiking. From the monastery, you can continue down toward the Qadisha Valley. At one point, take the right-hand path through the monastery’s garden, walking between the fruit trees, and you will eventually connect with the Qadisha Valley trail.
Personally, I find this particular trail to be one of the best in the Qadisha Valley. It is easy to moderate, with beautiful views throughout, and combines the natural scenery of the valley with the atmosphere and history of the monastery.
Overall, Saint Anthony’s Monastery in Qozhaya is much more than just a place to visit for a church or a museum. It is a living monastery, a historic site, and a great starting point for exploring the Qadisha Valley. If you have the time, I would definitely recommend staying overnight and doing the trail.
