From reading the reviews I believe most people did not take the time to actually enjoy...
Hot Springs National Park的点评
点评:the park. Visit the park service web site and read about what to expect.
My only issue--and it has nothing to do w/ the park itself--is that it was unbearably hot/humid which made walking more than a few yards exhausting.
Stop at the city visitors' center for a map and overview then take off and explore. Parking is "interesting". I discovered that there is a charge (and not cheap) for parking along the main street and city lots but it is free along the side streets and on the upper levels of the city parking garage so walk half a block and save some money.
Enjoy seeing the incredible architecture of the remaining bathhouses along the main drag. The first, Lamar, is the NPS gift shop and open to the public. Two others are still open as bathhouses but require reservations for the "bathhouse experience". Fordyce is open to the public w/ tours by the NPS as well as self-guided (see the separate heading for that). One is a hotel but the lobby is open and there is a restaurant and coffee shop as an excuse to visit. Another is a restaurant/brew pub w/ very good beers made from the mineral water straight from the springs. Unfortunately a couple of the original houses are closed for refurbishing but you can still get an idea about the architecture.
Enjoy the park at the end of "bath house row" w/ the "cascade" from one of the actual springs. Stick your hand in the water and feel how hot it is (seriously it was 98* when I visited and you could still see the steam from the heat of the water which registers between 120 & 140* as it leaves the ground). Climb the stairs next to the scenic waterfall to the actual spring and enjoy the view of the city behind you. Then take the scenic walk behind the bathhouses and get a view of the city as you meander back to where you started. If you take your map w/ you even better as you can see the sites from an unusual vantage point.
Return to your car and take a drive up the mountain and enjoy the absolutely gorgeous scenery or, if the day is bearable you can hike. There are several stops along the way including the cool springs just outside the city, overlooks of the city and surrounding area, and the tower at the top of the mountain. There is a charge (that I think is excessive) to take the elevator to the top but you can also get a pretty good view from the edge of the lot and the small viewing area just below. The mountains, streams, flora and fauna, and views are worth the drive.
I saw pretty much everything there is to see and probably will not return but glad I went and enjoyed my trip.
