A Powerful and Emotional Journey Through History
Holocaust Memorial Center For The Jews Of Macedonia的点评
点评:The Holocaust Memorial Center for the Jews of Macedonia in Skopje is truly a unique museum in our country.
It is built right on the site where the Jewish quarter once stood before the 1963 earthquake, which already gives the whole place a very strong sense of history and meaning. The museum opened in 2011 and is dedicated to the memory of the Jewish community of Skopje and Macedonia.
Inside, you’ll find powerful black-and-white photographs of real people from the community—many of whom were deported in 1943 to the Treblinka death camp. Seeing their faces makes the story very real and personal, not just history in a book.
The whole exhibition is very well designed and quite dramatic in its concept. For me, the most emotional part is stepping into the original restored railway wagon—an authentic train car of the type used for the deportations. It really leaves a strong impression and stays with you.
The information throughout the museum is in both Macedonian and English, so it is easy to follow for international visitors. Photography is not allowed in the exhibition spaces, except in the entrance hall right when you come in.
The museum is open every day except Monday, and on weekends it has shorter working hours.
It is not an easy visit emotionally, but it is an important one—very educational, very powerful, and definitely one of those places in Skopje that you don’t forget.
