点评:The Roman theater of Trieste was walking distance from our hotel and it is a performance venue located in the ancient city of Tergeste, which later became the city of Trieste. It is just on one side of the street and free to walk around. There are plaques with a bit of information and one must go to the internet to get the full story.
We learned that until today, no other ancient monument of the theater, amphitheater, odeon, or circus type has been identified in Trieste. Built on the outskirts of the city, by the sea, it is enhanced with decorative improvements over more than a century beginning in the late 1st century BC.
The monument is modest in size, measuring less than 65 m in diameter, but estimates of its capacity vary widely, from 2,250 to 6,000 spectators, depending on which site you read--impressive either way. The theater is well-preserved given its construction origin and it was rediscovered only early in the 19th century, after having been buried beneath other buildings since the Middle Ages, and excavated in the second half of the 1930s. We could see that work is still ongoing to preserve and discover more.
Easy walk from central Trieste and if you appreciate history then definitely worth the time to see and learn.
