点评:Kiyomizu-dera is an absolute masterpiece of a temple. The massive main hall is built incredibly high up on wooden pillars, offering sweeping, panoramic views of Kyoto.
Learning about the history here was wild! I was fascinated to hear the crazy legend about the wooden stage. Apparently, back in the Edo period, people used to actually jump off the 13-meter (43-foot) high balcony because they believed surviving the fall would grant their wishes. It sounds pretty crazy to us today, but it is an amazing piece of local folklore!
Down at the base, you'll find the Otowa Waterfall. It is split into three separate streams of water, and drinking from them is said to bring either health/longevity, academic success, or a happy love life.
The entire area is incredibly lively. There are so many visitors walking around in beautiful, traditional kimonos, and the atmosphere is so welcoming that you can easily take some wonderful photos with people. It is a highly memorable experience that perfectly captures the heart and history of Kyoto!
