点评:We made our ascent in the late afternoon, at a particularly quiet time, and had the entire gondola to ourselves.
The view from the observation deck is nothing short of stunning, with Sapporo stretching out far below. The souvenir shop is also surprisingly good, with a great selection.
We had planned to stay until after sunset to enjoy the famous night view. Unfortunately, thick fog soon enveloped the mountain, so we decided to head back down earlier than planned.
This was just as the crowds were beginning to arrive. Most visitors apparently come for the sunset and night view, so I can imagine the observation deck — and presumably the gondola on the way down — can get very crowded.
Although relatively few people were heading down with us, the wait was surprisingly long, and we couldn’t quite work out why. One gondola arrived full and then left again without taking any passengers waiting to descend. Not entirely sure how that was supposed to help with the queue.
We did, however, get a consolation prize.
As the gondola descended, we caught the evening sky just as the sun was setting.
It was spectacular.
Sometimes, leaving a little early has its rewards.
