Knowledgeable Tour Guide, But Not Quite Worth the Price

点评：We visited Hutton-in-the-Forest on a Thursday lunchtime as we didn’t have our dog with us and wanted to see inside the castle. We had lunch at the café, did the castle tour, and walked around the gardens.
The staff were friendly, and the tour guide was very knowledgeable. You could tell they knew a lot about the castle, its history, and the family who lived there. I think the tour would be good for people who are really interested in the history of the building and the family connected to it.
However, for us, it felt a little expensive for what it was. Entry for the castle tour and gardens was around £14–£16 per adult, and while the tour was informative, we didn’t find it as interesting as some other castle tours we’ve done before. The gardens were also a bit underwhelming, and overall there wasn’t as much to do as we expected. Some reviews made it sound better than it was, so it felt slightly oversold.
Parking was easy, and the toilets were near the entrance, which was handy. However, the layout could be improved. Access to the walled gardens involved going all the way around the castle, and there didn’t seem to be an exit near the car park from the gardens, which was inconvenient. Better signage would also help, especially for knowing where things are and which areas are open to visitors.
We also ate at the café. I had a jacket potato, my partner had a panini and one coffee, which came to nearly £30 altogether. The food was fine, but it felt a little expensive for what it was. They do offer free water, which was appreciated.
Overall, it was okay, but we probably wouldn’t return. In our opinion, there are better castles and gardens in the Lake District for around the same price, or just a little bit more.
