点评:This is the most beautiful museum that I had visited by far. The museum tuck into a remote Shiga mountain which is not conveniently accessible. I had to take a half hour train from Kyoto to Ishiyama and transfer to an hour long bus ride to reach the museum. Though not easy to reach but I am very happy that this journey worth a lifetime of memory.
The museum was commissioned by Mihoko Koyama. She lured the famous I.M. Pei out of retirement to undertake the architecture design of the museum. It was completed and opened almost 30 years ago in 1997. The design concept was basing on Chinese poem «桃花源記» by 陶淵明. Instead of peach trees, you'll be greeted by rows of sakura trees after the visitor centre. Then you enter long tunnel through a mountain and after that cross over a long suspension bridge and finally you reach the relatively small museum building didn't know that the entire part of it buried underground. The museum itself is an architecture marvel. The poetic design concept coupled with the finest Japanese craftmanship made the museum one of the most beautiful building. Entrance ticket only cost a measly 1,300 yen and the all permanent exhibits are private collection of the owner and they are all rare and exquisite art pieces purchased throughout the years. Unfortunately photography is prohibited in all exhibiting halls.
While you are there make sure you try out both the cafe and restaurant in the museum. Both have excellent menu with sustainable ingredient.
