A Fascinating Meiji-Era School and National Treasure
旧开智学校的点评
点评：I visited the Former Kaichi School in May 2026 after seeing Matsumoto Castle. Since it stands just north of the castle, it was easy to include in the same walk.
I first tried to understand the background of the school. The Former Kaichi School was established soon after the Meiji government introduced a modern school system, and the present building was completed in 1876. It served as an actual school for many years before being moved, restored, and opened as an educational museum. I was impressed to learn that it was designated a National Treasure in 2019.
The architecture was one of the highlights for me. At first glance, the building looks Western, but as I looked more closely, I noticed that it combines Western-looking details with Japanese elements, including the traditional curved gable above the entrance. This mixture is one of the reasons the building is considered so valuable and was designated a National Treasure in 2019. It gives the building a very distinctive early Meiji atmosphere.
Inside, I walked through corridors, classrooms, and exhibition rooms covering the history of the school, the architecture of the building, textbooks, and other materials related to elementary education. The English explanations were helpful, and I found it interesting to see how a provincial city like Matsumoto adopted modern education in the early Meiji period.
I had expected the visit to be fairly short, but there was much more to see than I had imagined. For me, it was well worth the 600 yen admission fee. Anyone interested in education, architecture, or Japan’s modernization in the early Meiji period could easily spend quite a bit of time here, and it added real depth to my visit to Matsumoto after seeing the castle.
