A golden shell. Mysore Palace dazzles outside but falters inside
迈索尔土邦主宫殿 (Amba Vilas)的点评
点评：Mysore Palace is undeniably spectacular from the outside—grand, photogenic, and every bit the postcard icon. Unfortunately, the experience inside doesn’t live up to that promise.
The interiors feel sparse and oddly lacking in atmosphere. While there are some murals and paintings scattered through the rooms, many spaces are bare, offering little sense of history or soul. Add to that the heavy crowds—most visitors more focused on selfies than the palace itself—and it’s hard to connect with the place. Entry is chaotic, with plenty of pushing and shoving, which, while common in India, doesn’t help the experience.
At 1,000 rupees for foreign visitors, the ticket price feels steep for what’s on display inside. The gardens, however, are genuinely pleasant and well worth a stroll. We’re also planning to see the palace lit up at night, which is free and reportedly far more impressive.
Overall, the visit was disappointing. That said, if you’re in Mysore, this is one of those places you’ll probably feel obliged to see—if only to say you’ve been.
A practical note: on our autorickshaw ride to the palace just before opening time, the driver tried the classic trick of claiming it didn’t open until 11:30 and offering to “take us around” until then. We declined, insisted on going straight there, and—surprise—the palace opened at 10 as expected. Use Uber to get the real autorickshaw price. For example, our ride should have cost about 35 rupees; the driver initially asked for 100. Always agree on a price before you get in, and never accept offers to be taken to any shops—ever.
